Funded by HIVOS under the Resource of Open Mind Programme (ROOM), Cairo Hackers Space, together with Design Hub Kampala and iZone Hub, we embarked on a technological collaboration based on 3d printing technology. The aim was to showcase the potential of DIY manufacturing technology as well as hacker spaces in a way that acts to empower the local marketplaces and local production.
Some of outcomes
Working knowledge on how to build a 3d printer, and how to model for 3d printing.
A 3d printer that is be available for all DHK members of the new makerspace. The printer has a prominent place in our co-working area and has been used for various demonstrations during (school) visits. New printer cartridge has been ordered to keep it running, and we are currently also looking at cartridges from recycled plastic that can be manufactured locally.
The intention to rebuild a new 3D printer with the help of the knowledge and ability to print parts with the current printer. This printer will have a different printer-head, which allows engraving. This would be a new addition and service provided by the Makerspace.
After the workshop participants were asked to work on building businesses cases and an awareness campaign of 3d printing and where it can be done (the Makerspace – Design Hub Kampala), this process is still ongoing.
