Freedom of Expression: Creative Talks Africa

Freedom of Expression: Creative Talks Africa

How can art be used to create safe spaces? How compromised are artists in Uganda in their freedom to express themselves?

Kerunen Suzan (singer-songwriter), Matt Kayem (visual artist), Arinda Daphine (writer, poet), Rehema Nanfuka (film, theater maker) and Daudi Oguttu (journalist, tv/radio presenter) developed an artistic social experiment as a means to create a space in which people can speak their minds freely.

At the Creative Talks Africa sessions this month on the 14th June, the group will share their experiences trying to create a space in which anyone could express themselves freely. They will talk about the artistic process, setting goals and re-evaluating expectations and definitions of success in the process. They will also share about how the project will continue in the future.

The talk will be followed by artistic performances by Daphine Arinda, Suzan Kerunen and Rehema Nanfuka. The performances are inspired by the expressions from the safe spaces they created.
